A Different Way to Grow Older:
My Journey to Southern France
Living the life I envision.
My name is Nicholas, and I am a father, a former U.S. Army soldier, and a lifelong educator who spent more than three decades teaching science in American public high schools. Since retiring from teaching in 2022, I have continued my journey as a writer, exploring new possibilities for the next chapter of my life and advocating for a more empathetic, inclusive, and connected world.
I have lived in different countries, speak several languages, and have always been fascinated by the ways people live, think, and relate to one another. My father was French, and I spent part of my youth in France. Since retiring, I have returned to southern France during the summers, and with each visit, I have become increasingly convinced that this is where I want to grow older.
Why? Because I want more out of retirement than simply slowing down. I want to keep living.
Like many Americans approaching their later years, I began to question what aging in the United States might look like for me. I imagined a future in which driving became difficult, maintaining a house became burdensome, and my world gradually grew smaller. The prospect of eventually moving into a retirement community, surrounded almost exclusively by people my own age, was not the future I wanted.
Then I examined and imagined my life in southern France.
In its walkable cities and towns, I discovered a way of life in which older people remain part of the everyday fabric of society. They share public spaces with younger generations, meet friends in cafés, shop at neighborhood markets, and walk through lively squares filled with conversation, music, and street performers. Age does not have to mean isolation, and getting around does not have to depend on owning a car.
I could imagine myself living in a place where a short tram ride takes me to the Mediterranean beaches, where a train journey brings me to Nîmes and its remarkable Roman amphitheater, and where the wild white horses and pink flamingos of the Camargue are within easy reach. Affordable public transportation connects communities, while everyday life offers countless opportunities to stay active, curious, and socially engaged.
This is not simply a dream of retiring in a beautiful place. It is a decision to choose a different way of life.
There are practical advantages, too. France has a well-established public healthcare system, and eligible residents can access healthcare at costs that can be substantially lower than those many Americans face. Education is another striking example of the difference. The cost of attending a French public university can be a fraction of what American families pay for higher education.
Of course, moving to another country is not as simple as buying a plane ticket. Residency requirements, healthcare enrollment, housing, finances, language, and the many details of everyday life can seem intimidating. For people who have spent their lives in the United States, knowing where to begin can be the biggest obstacle of all.
That is where I hope to help.
I speak French fluently, have firsthand experience of life in France, and have spent years learning how to navigate the systems and practicalities involved in making a life there. I want to help middle-class Americans discover whether southern France could be a realistic option for their own retirement, understand the steps involved, and approach the process with greater confidence.
My goal is not to convince everyone to leave the United States. It is to show that we have choices and that a fulfilling later life does not have to look the way we have been told it should.
You do not necessarily need to be wealthy to live well in France. You do need reliable information, realistic expectations, and a willingness to embrace a new culture. With the right preparation, a move that once seemed impossible may be more attainable than you think.
