Hernando County is the 82nd fastest growing county in the US
based on rate of growth between January 2000 and July 2006 for
all counties that began the century with more than ten
thousand inhabitants, according to recent U.S. Census Bureau
estimates.
Hernando County which was established in 1843, grew in
population to 130,802 by the year 2000. In the six years that
marked the beginning of the 21st Century, the county increased
the number of residents by 26.5 percent bringing the estimated
total population in July 2006 to 165,409.
The outstanding growth of the last six years has made Hernando
County the twelth fastest growing county in the Sunshine State
of Florida and the 82nd fastest in the nation.
The median value for homes within the 478 square mile
jurisdiction of Hernando County was $87,300 in 2000 but the
Bureau had no statistics on home value for 2006. Determining
how the rapid growth may have affected the value of homes in
the area is difficult but the current auctions that follow
should give some indication of the bargains still available.
