| Fertilizing | Feed in early Spring with slow release type. Keep roots cool with thick layer of mulch to retain moisture during heat of Summer and colder months of Winter. |
| Pruning | Prune in late Winter, or early Spring before new growth begins, and berries grow out on new wood. Thin out interior branches to improve air flow, and light penetration. Always use clean shears to avoid possibly spreading diseases. |
| Deer | Deer do favor their taste. Consider planting the American Boxwood near them to deter deer since deer do not like their strong, unpleasant smell. If in a high deer area, spray every 3 to 6 months with deer repellent. |
| Flowers | Pink to blue small flowers in Spring turn into clusters of pearl shaped bright purple berries. Leaves turn yellow in the Fall and berries stay through Winter, or until the birds eat them. |
