Waxleaf Ligustrum

(Ligustrum  japonicum "Texanum")

Small white flowers starting in Spring in cone-shaped clusters 6-12" long on this broadleaf evergreen shrub with dark green foliage. In summer forms small green berries that turn blue to purple-black in the fall on its dense symmetrical and rounded canopy with 2-3" long glossy leaves. Fast-growing (once established) at about 2-3Ft. per year. Also known as Waxleaf Privet, Japanese Privet, and Wax Leaf Ligustrum. Perfect selection for hedges, privacy screen, foundation and borders. Planting-General Likes clay, loam, sand, silt soil that is moist but well drained to dry when established. Soil pH in the 6-8 range, moderately acid to moderately alkaline.
Planting-Spacing Plant 4-6 Feet for solid hedges, 12 plus feet for space between plants with no pruning
Watering Average, low once established. Can add Root Stimulation which helps early root development and strengths roots, as well as, reduces plant shock.
Fertilizing Feed in spring with slow release fertilize for shrubs & trees. Do not fertilize after two weeks to the average first frost to avoid early frost damage.
Pruning Do not require pruning. They do response well to shaping to form hedges or very attractive small trees.
Deer Deer do not favor their taste. If in a high deer area, spray every 3 to 6 months with deer repellent.
