Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Whoever does not bear their own cross and come after me, cannot be my disciple.”

True discipleship  - coming along behind Jesus - requires prioritizing Jesus above all else, including family and possessions, and being willing to "hate" (meaning to love less) even close family members in comparison to Jesus.

Jesus emphasizes the need for self-denial and carrying one's cross, signifying a commitment to obedience and submission to God's will, even to the point of death.

Anything worthwhile, sooner or later, calls for commitment and motivation.

My love of Jesus -  born in my heart thanks to his life, teachings, death and resurrection - keeps me trying to live a life like His.

My gratitude to God, my thanksgiving - that is the meaning of the word Eucharist-  keeps me keeping on in my priesthood.

Occasionally – indeed frequently – thanking about all the gifts I have received – and indeed still have – across the PIES: the physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual dimensions of my life – swell my heart with gratitude.

How often do you stop and thank  God for the graces you have received; including your friends?

All too many people take so much for granted – until they are bereaved. Taking funerals helps me stay grateful. And young at heart.

I thank God for now; for now is the only time we are alive. And as you are here now, I thank God for you.
