Bob Dylan and Julian Lage
BOB DYLAN´s BAND
by Uncle John
I met Bob Dylan´s band when I was working the front desk,
overnight at The Century House in Latham New York, three decades ago.
The band and some crew checked into the hotel about 3 am.
I
didn´t see Bob Dylan but believe he was there.I think it was Jeff Rosen who asked me if there was any food to eat,
and I told him I would open the restaurant kitchen and they could help themselves.
I was most impressed meeting Tony Garnier who is still Bob´s best Bass man.
I
t seems Bob Dylan will play about the same set of songs throughout his tour but every concert is truly different. The songs are the same but the interpretation changes.I recently listened to a stream of Bob Dylan´s entire July 14th show in Philadelphia.
Danny Archer was at the show and had this to say about the band.
"The lights came up as the band started playing. Right away, I could hear the twin guitars, and I knew that Julian Lage had made it back from Europe in time, and I suspected that Joel Paterson was the other guitar. They meshed so well with bass player Tony Garnier and the drummer Anton Fig, and they provided moments that felt country, then jazzy, then swing. Their interplay was wonderful, and they added just the right amount when they each had a chance to solo. Hope this combo gets some flight time together with some more of Bob´s incredible repertoire."
Julian Lage joined Bob´s band in Santa Barbara on June 17th, and because he has some other commitments, has been in and out of the band and back again.
I first heard about Julian Lage when he was eleven years old. My roommate then was musician Eric Isaacs who saw Julian play and struck up a conversation with him, and when Julian found out he is a bass player, he invited Eric to come jam with him. Eric visited and played with him a couple times.
"Here´s this little kid with a big guitar, and the sounds he was creating, were incredible." He described him as phenomenal, with great potential and unique ability.
The following year Julian Lage performed at the Grammy Awards.
He is deeply schooled in the blues, jazz and classical music.
He reminds me of the music playing of Django Reinhardt,
who had a strong influence on Jerry Garcia.
What a treat for Bob Dylan fans to experience this band playing with him!
