January 2025 (Part 18) New Zealand Trip - Day Seventeen: Queenstown to Dunedin We reluctantly said goodbye to Queenstown the next day and headed toward Dunedin five or so hours away on the east coast. We stopped for a break at the Jones Family Fruit Stall, enjoying some cherries and stretching our legs in their garden.
We stopped at Jimmy's Pies in Roxburgh for lunch. The pies were decent, but David promised us better ones when we got to Christchurch. We finally made it to our condo in Dunedin, which was on the ocean along the south of town, while much of the rest of town was along the sheltered and shallow inlet and harbor to the northeast. After a long drive, apparently the boys needed to sit for a bit (or just needed wifi access). One of David's friends joined us shortly after we arrived for a quick visit. We eventually headed out, first toward a grocery store a couple blocks inland where we laughed at the caution sign about sea lions.
There was a great sand beach in front of the apartments and to the north, which we went along for a bit before crossing back to the south and wandering out to a point along a much more rocky shore. The path was actually marked as closed, but with a clear and obvious gap in the fence. Multiple people told us to go through and enjoy the path, which had been washed out in a couple places but which was still easily passable.
Loved the sign at the corner.
That evening, we went out to meet David's good friends Matthew and Kim, who lived just east of town along the bay. This marked our last delivery of stuff we had hauled from the US. Matthew's father had worked for Frito-Lay, and at David's request, we brought him bags of Fritos along with Frito bean dip, as they were either unavailable or had a different recipe in New Zealand.
