March 2026 (Part 05)

South Florida Trip –Day 6: Florida Keys and Key Largo

The next day, we ate breakfast at the beach at the Truman Annex then headed out for the drive up the Overseas Highway to Key Largo.  We had time for a decent lunch before we went kayaking on either Plantation Key or Tavernia Key up the Tavernia Creek. Enjoyed seeing a dolphin come buy as we were getting in the kayaks.  We first headed to the end of the canal the shop was on, finding two mother manatee's each with a calf in the shallow, warmer water.  Grrr ... did not get good pictures through the dry bag.

We made our way up Tavernia Creek and found two more mothers each with calves, making 8 total manatee for the trip, along with another dolphin on the way back.

We may our way up a channel into the mangroves, which led to a small, shaded swimming hole.

Another dolphin (or the same one as earlier) came by quickly as we were getting out.
