May 2024 (Part 04) Delaware Beach Weekend Really, really enjoyed a long visit to the beach for Memorial Day Weekend (plus extra days to make a five day weekend). The sunset over the Chesapeake and then the moon through the clouds were stunning on the drive out.
The shorebirds had returned. Alas, the osprey did not rebuild their nest yet again near us.
We took a pontoon boat out of Long Neck onto Indian River Bay on a beautiful day.
Tank really, really enjoyed going for several swims. So glad we brought sticks from home as there were none to find at the point where he goes swimming. Unfortunately, the first swimming session was near sunset, so there was a lot of glare with the sun pretty low behind Tank. He was sure happy to be on his way there.
He made it off the small beach and to the grass before lying down to chew on the stick for a bit.
He got to swim several times.
We had a fund paddle to the estuary with Alexa and Steve in the double kayak.
That earned Alexa time in the hammock in the afternoon.
So clearly we weren't up and at the beach for sunrise, so these are the moonrise from the first and second day.
We enjoyed a paddle around Cedar Island where there are a number of egrets nesting.
We had some fun on the Jetski, especially as the girls spotted an eagle's nest along MIllers Creek to the north of Assawomen Wildlife Refuge near Bethany.
One of the eagles was perched on a branch nearby.
When we went back out on Sunday, the eagle wasn't to be seen. On our way back, the marine layer that was over the beach had come inland and now covered much of the bay. We couldn't see far enough to feel safe and quickly headed west toward our home, glad to get out of the fog soon. However, this meant any plans to ride for a while were now ended. We heard later that the lifeguards had pulled people out of the water as they couldn't see the swimmers. The next morning when we went to the beach, it was still hazy but a bit better. The lifeguards were having to pace between their towers to ensure they could see all areas under their charge.
