January 2023 (Part 02) A Weekend In Houston We decided to escape for MLK Jr Weekend, heading to Houston, well, just because. On Friday, we grabbed two rideshare bikes and headed off. Our first stop was the nearby Sam Houston Park. The park contained several "authentically restored buildings that span the city's history from before statehood to the oil boom of the early 20th century" along with several statues, including this fun display of a fox family around a small pond.
From there, we headed into Buffalo Bayou Park and a bike path along the waterway. It was a beautiful day for mid-January, in the mid to upper fifties.
Found this water sculpture to be fascinating.
We kept going on beyond the park, along sidewalks, finally getting to another neat area, Memorial Park. We then headed off on bike paths along streets to get to the Waterwall. This was one of the most photographed places in Houston. It was well worth it, but we would have been better off turning around at the end of Buffalo Bayou and taking an Uber rather than riding along the streets. Hard to describe this park. It held a huge semicircle structure with water cascading down both sides. On the outside, it went straight down all the way. On the inside, it hit a series of small stairs at the bottom. The overall effect was mesmerizing, but it really required video to capture the effect.
Stopped for this picture on the rids back. This is a huge sculpture in the window of a home.
That night, we headed to the Houston Improv for a comedy show by Jay Pharoah. That was a lot of fun.
