July 2026 (Part 02) Delaware Beach Weekend Enjoyed a long weekend with beautiful weather. We drove out early on Thursday, and headed to the beach on Friday morning. That night, we went to Freeman Stage for a concert. The remodeled venue was great. Really enjoyed the New Orleans Preservation Hall Jazz Band as the opening act.
Trombone Shorty was great, although we were a bit dismayed that the guitars in the background muddied out some of the horns. Shorty was clearly an amazing musician, playing the trombone, trumpet, keyboards, and drums.
We headed out early on Saturday and enjoyed a great kayak trip around Cedar Island and into the marsh areas nearby.
The Ghyzels joined us around lunch time, after which we went on a hike in James Farm Ecological Preserve outside Bethany Beach.
We went for a paddle across the Bay in Assawoman Wildlife Preserve.
On Sunday morning, we headed to the Delaware State Park beach access adjacent to the Indian River Inlet. Delighted to find two pods of dolphins hunting in the inlet, as the confluence of the outgoing tide and incoming ocean waves must have stirred up a bunch of fish. One pod was in the inlet next to us, with another father inside the bay. There was one mother and infant staying very close together.
We went to the Yachtley Crew concert that night at Freeman Stage. An amazing moon rise over the trees to the east.
